So yeah, the film made just $3.4 million over its debut weekend, which to be fair is a whopping 4.6x weekend multiplier. As noted yesterday, the $13.5 million-budgeted adventure has already earned $20m overseas, and Lionsgate’s spend and exposure on this acquisition were minuscule. The film was shot in the Summer of 2014, has bounced around the release schedule and just recently shifted to this weekend after previously being slated for a mid-November release. Lions Gate Entertainment’s The Wild Life is an animated picture from Belgium which retells the Robinson Crusoe story from the point-of-view of the animals. Even if it plays as frontloaded as the last two, the film still ends its run with around $31m in domestic grosses. We're still looking at a $10m thriller that posted a $15m opening weekend. When the Bough Breaks did not open anywhere near as high as No Good Deed and The Perfect Guy (over/under $25 million weekends). When The Bough Breaks atrocious dialogue, which fails to inject suspense or intrigue, is accompanied by lackluster direction by Jon Cassar that doesnt come close to building it into anything. There needs to be room for Soul Plane and Rosewood. They play to those (of any demographic) who miss the “home invasions come in many forms” genre of the 1990’s as well as those who want to see purely commercial genre movies with actors who look like them that aren’t specifically about the evils of racism and/or historical struggles to overcome.
